What to do when the signals disagree

  1. Start with your own evidence. Confirm the failing request, region, tenant, timestamp, and error class. A provider-wide signal cannot replace a reproducible symptom in your environment.
  2. Check observed impact. If Updog or your own synthetics show abnormal errors across regions, treat an upstream incident as plausible even when the provider page is still green.
  3. Check official acknowledgement. Use the provider's status feed to see what it has named, which products or regions are in scope, and when its account of the event changed.
  4. Classify the evidence, not the brand. Observed impact plus official acknowledgement is strong upstream evidence. Observed impact alone is a probable upstream issue. Official acknowledgement without impact in your checks may mean your region or product is outside the blast radius.

Updog's primary signal is observed impact inferred from aggregated, anonymized Datadog telemetry. OutageDeck's primary signal is what a provider has published on its official status feed. One can reveal widespread errors before an acknowledgement; the other records the provider's own scope, wording, and timeline.

Which one can detect a provider problem earlier?

Updog can be earlier because it does not wait for the provider to publish an incident. Datadog has published an example where it surfaced a DynamoDB degradation 32 minutes before AWS updated its status page. That is an example, not a guaranteed lead time for every provider or incident.

Should I use Updog or OutageDeck during an incident?

Use both when the dependency matters. Pair Updog or your own synthetic telemetry for observed impact with the provider's official feed for acknowledgement and scope. Agreement is strong upstream evidence. Disagreement tells you what to investigate next instead of forcing a false all-clear or outage verdict.
